ARCO DI TRENTO (Italy), 13 April 2014 – It was an intense turn of events this weekend in Arco di Trento at round two of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship. Local hero Chiara Fontanesi was the first Italian of the weekend to top the box while HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane rode smooth and consistent to claim her first ever FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship red plate and take third over all at the WMX round of Trentino.
In race one yesterday afternoon, Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge took the holeshot and smashed out thirteen consistently fast laps to win race one ahead of Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot. Although, initially it appeared Lancelot would make a run at the young Australian as she set the fastest lap time of the race on lap three, nothing came of it and the French wonder settled for second, five seconds ahead of the reigning FIM Women’s Motocross World Champion Chiara Fontanesi. HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane and Team Dragon Moto’s Stephanie Laier came home in fourth and fifth respectively.
When the gates dropped for WMX moto two, it was the scenario everyone had been waiting for with the red plate holder Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge and the reigning WMX world champion and Italian fan favorite Chiara Fontanesi going 1 – 2 around turn one followed by HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane, Team Dragon Moto’s Stephanie Laier and Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot. The Rutledge vs Fontanesi show had burst into life with the Italian crowd not afraid to get in on the action and show some love for their Italian star Fontanesi as she tried everything to find a way around the Australian Rutledge. After leading the race for nineteen minutes, disaster struck Rutledge when she caught an edge through the waves and went down hard. While the fans went wild for Fontanesi, poor Rutledge was forced to watch the points pass her as she spent an entire lap trying to kick-start her bike. One lap later, Rutledge was finally back up and going but well outside of points. Meanwhile Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot was having a few problems of her own, going down soon after moving into third and then going down again half a lap later to drop her back to eighth.
Eventually, Chiara Fontanesi took the checkers and won her first race of the year four seconds ahead of Team Dragon Moto’s Stephanie Laier who had passed HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane on the last lap. Italian Francessca Nocera put in an outstanding performance for fourth with Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot recovering for fifth.
After a dramatic day on the track, the reigning FIM Women’s Motocross World Champion Chiara Fontanesi took her first WMX round win this year with the ex FIM Women’s Motocross World Champion Team Dragon Moto’s Stephanie Laier taking second and HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane taking third.
HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane is now leading the WMX championship two points clear of Chiara Fontanesi. After a tough day, Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge drops back to third in the standings, five points off the championship lead.
In three weeks, the next round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship will take place in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands.
