Motocross World Championship Fontanesi wins first heat in Lierop – Laier takes maiden Title

LIEROP (THE NETHERLANDS), 29 August 2009 – Laier wrapped up her maiden Women’s World Championship Title at the end of the opening moto at Lierop, where she ended second behind eventual winner Fontanesi.

Runner up in the series Papenmeier took pole and was ready to attack German compatriot Laier to exploit her last Title chance. The latter qualified in second ahead of Kane, Veenstra and Fontanesi completing the top five.

At the start of the first moto Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Laier took the holeshot and tried to pull away to take the Title with gallantry. In the meantime debutant Fontanesi of the Yamaha 3C Racing worked her way up from the bottom of the top five and pushed hard until she got to Laier’s tail.

A mistake of the German opened a door for Fontanesi who snatched the lead immediately. Laier fought back but the 15 year old Italian held off the challenge and took her maiden win in the series.

Laier was an eventual second to bring home the Title.

Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Papenmeier took third to build on her second place in the Championship as rival Franke is out of Lierop due to a collarbone injury.

Suzuki fellow riders Veenstra and Kane completed the top five with the latter trying to snatch third in the Championship from Franke in tomorrow’s final heat of the 2009 season.
