Musquin vs Goncalves duel to end at Honda Grand Prix of Brazil

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 8 September 2009 – The FIM Motocross World Championship will come to an end this weekend in Brazil where the series is back after a 10 year absence.

Cairoli has already wrapped up the MX1 Title but Nagl, Philippaerts, Desalle, De Dycker and Coppins will battle tooth and nail to take the best possible spot inside the top six.

The Honda GP of Brazil at Canelinha will surely hand out the MX2 World Title as KTM factory team mates Musquin and Goncalves are the sole riders left with a Title chance.

MX1

Cairoli made it to his third World crown in Lierop ten days ago as the Yamaha Red Bull De Carli rider took his maiden MX1 Title. Cairoli, who rode with a painful left knee in the Dutch GP, underwent surgery immediately after and is now  ready to face Canelinha, a new venue to the FIM Motocross World Championship MX1/MX2.

While the Italian will ride with no particular goals, runner up in the Championship Nagl needs to fight tooth and nail to defend the runner up spot from last year’s MX1 World Champion Philippaerts.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Nagl is 24 points ahead of a hungry Philippaerts wanting to make up for the loss of the Title with the runner up spot in the series.

Behind the Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross rider is this season’s revelation Desalle of LS Motors Honda. At his first and last season with the squad taking the Belgian to his maiden GP win in Czech Republic and to other five podiums, Desalle wants to reward the team with a top three finish in the series.

Desalle is just two points away from Philippaerts but Lierop winner De Dycker of Teka Suzuki WMX1 is fifth in the Championship at a two point distance from his Belgian countryman.

Coppins completes a close top six with Tanel Leok in seventh.

MX2

The 2009 MX2 World Title is an affair in between the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo as current leader Musquin and Goncalves are all set on the Honda Grand Prix of Brazil. Both are looking for their maiden Title, with the sole difference that 2009 will be the last chance for Portuguese Goncalves to take an MX2 Title – he will move to MX1 in 2010 when the MX2 maximum age limit will be 23.

24 year old Goncalves will look at Brazil as a sort of second home Grand Prix. On the other hand Musquin is first in the Championship with an advantage of 22 points. The Frenchman has won in Lierop to gain one more win than Goncalves, as he also has five more moto wins.

Bud Racing Kawasaki PSM’s Paulin sits in third place but has lost his Title chances at Lierop where he scored only seven points at the end of a troubled weekend.

Guarneri of Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci Motocross is a distant fourth in the Championship ahead of fifth placed Roczen who took his third season podium at Lierop.

South American speed star Martin Davalos will also join the MX2 series this weekend.
