AFRICA ECO RACE : LE VENT DE SABLE SE MÊLE A LA COURSE

Jusqu’à présent, l’AFRICA ECO RACE avait été épargnée par les soucis météo. Hélas, ce vendredi matin, pour la 10ème étape, un vent violant balayait le plateau d’Amodjar provoquant un vent de sable qui a empêché les hélicoptères de l’organisation de décoller. Sans hélico, impossible d’assurer une sécurité optimale et de surveiller la course et donc, la décision a été prise de faire partir les motos, autos et camion en convoi jusqu’au ravitaillement essence d’où a été donné le départ. Du coup, la spéciale de 387 km a été raccourcie de 190 km, amputant le parcours de la partie de dunes prévues en début d’étape.

Dans la catégorie moto, après la pénalité de 6 minutes attribuée hier à Alessandro BOTTURI, autant dire que les bleus avaient un petit moral ce matin. En effet, difficile de reprendre à la régulière ces 6 minutes à Jacopo CERRUTI, le pilote APRILIA, impérial depuis le début du Rallye. Malgré cela, Alessandro BOTTURI a tout donné au guidon de sa YAMAHA 700 Ténéré pour remporter la spéciale avec 00:02:26 sur l’APRILA 660 Tuareg de Jacopo CERUTTI, 2ème du jour. Au général, BOTTURI ne compte plus que 00:04:38 de retard sur CERRUTI.

C’est peu mais aussi beaucoup à la fois puisque demain, il ne restera que 247 km de spéciale pour que BOTTURI essaye de renverser la vapeur. Mais, comme il va ouvrir la piste, autant dire que c’est quasiment mission impossible. D’autant plus que CERRUTI pourra compter sur son co-équipier chez APRILIA, Francesco MONTANARI, auteur d’une remontée fantastique aujourd’hui pour finalement terminer troisième. Celui-ci pourrait venir jouer les trouble-fêtes demain.

Cette fin de rallye réussie plutôt bien aux jeunes loups de la discipline puisque le Français Attilio FERT se classe 4ème au guidon de sa KTM, devant la HONDA de l’Italien Marco Aurelio FONTANA et la KTM du Suisse Alexandre VAUDAN, toujours leader du Challenge Rookie Rider By Acerbis. A présent, avec les problèmes d’alimentation en essence rencontrés aujourd’hui par Giovanni GRITTI, il est également leader des 450 au général.

Dans la Motul Xtreme Rider, Patrice CARRILLON termine à nouveau devant sur cette 11ème étape. Le Français est à présent 13ème au général et compte plus de 2 heures d’avance sur Antoine DETOURBET, son compatriote et dauphin chez les malles motos.

Sur quatre roues, Gautier PAULIN et Remi BOULANGER imposent à nouveau leur APACHE. Les français devancent de 26 secondes le CAN AM des Portugais Ricardo SOUSA et Jorge BRANDAO. A la veille de l’arrivée, cette légende du Motocross mondial, qui participe à son premier Rallye Tout Terrain, possède désormais près de 4 heures d’avance sur le TOYOTA Hilux des Belges Pascal FERYN, 3ème de l’étape. Il restait tout de même prudent lors des interviews à l’arrivée :

« Je tenais vraiment à signer une autre victoire d’étape sur cette AFRICA ECO RACE. En même temps c’est la meilleure façon de consolider notre première place. Mais, attention, tant que le drapeau à damiers n’est pas tombé, tout peut arriver ! Ne nous enflammons pas et attendons demain. »

Dans la catégorie camion, après leur cabriole d’hier et une bonne partie de la nuit à réparer le SCANIA endommagé après s’être couché dans les dunes, Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN et Marco SIEMONS se sont bien rachetés aujourd’hui. Les Hollandais terminent 9ème au scratch et devancent le TATRA de Tomas TOMECEK et le GINAF des Belges Cedric FERYN, Bjorn BURGELMAN et Tom DE LEEUW. Au général, sauf catastrophe, la victoire ne devrait pas échapper à TOMECEK qui possède plus de 2 heures d’avance.

Dans la course Classic, Andres BRABECK-LEMATHE et Laurent MAGAT sont sortis vainqueurs de l’unique Zone de Régularité de cette 10ème étape en n’étant qu’à 10 secondes du temps idéal sur ces 59 km. Au général, les Belges Eric et Tom CLAEYS sont toujours leaders sur leur TOYOTA BJ73 mais demain, il restera deux ZR de 59 km et 150 km. Cette dernière ZR, d’une distance inhabituelle dans la discipline, pourrait bien être le juge de paix de cette première édition sur l’AFRICA ECO RACE.

Comme toujours sur l’AFRICA ECO RACE, cette dernière journée du samedi constituera l’ultime étape comportant un secteur chronométré. L’unique occasion pour certains de performer avant de passer l’arrivée qui sera jugée non loin de Nouakchott après 247 km de spéciale. Il ne restera alors aux finishers qu’une liaison de 255 km pour rallier le bivouac installé près de Saint Louis au Sénégal et retrouver les amis, familles ou partenaires venus spécialement pour l’occasion.

AFRICA ECO RACE: THE SAND WIND MIXES WITH THE RACE

Up until now, the AFRICA ECO RACE has been spared from weather problems. Unfortunately, on Friday morning, for the 10th stage, a violent wind swept across the Amodjar plateau causing a sandstorm that prevented the organisation’s helicopters from taking off. Without a helicopter, it was impossible to ensure optimum safety and to monitor the race, so the decision was taken to send the bikes, cars and trucks in convoy to the petrol station from where the start was given. As a result, the 387km special stage was shortened by 190km, cutting out the section of dunes planned for the start of the stage.

In the motorbike category, after yesterday’s 6-minute penalty for Alessandro BOTTURI, it’s fair to say that the blues were in low spirits this morning. Indeed, it would have been difficult to take back those 6 minutes from Jacopo CERRUTI, the APRILIA driver, who has been imperious since the start of the Rally. Despite this, Alessandro BOTTURI gave his all on his Yamaha 700 Tenere to win the special stage with a time of 00:02:26 over Jacopo CERUTTI’s APRILA 660 Tuareg, 2nd on the day. Overall, BOTTURI is now just 00:04:38 behind CERRUTI.

That’s not much, but it’s also a lot, because tomorrow there will be just 247 km of special stage left for BOTTURI to try and turn things around. But, as he’ll be opening up the track, it’s almost mission impossible. The end of the rally was rather successful for the young guns of the discipline, with Frenchman Attilio FERT taking 4th place on his KTM, ahead of the HONDA of Italian Marco Aurelio FONTANA and the KTM of Swiss rider Alexandre VAUDAN, still leader of the Rookie Rider By Acerbis Challenge.

Now, with Giovanni GRITTI’s fuel supply problems today, he is also leader of the 450s overall. In the Motul Xtreme Rider, Patrice CARRILLON again finished ahead on this 11th stage. The Frenchman is now 13th overall and more than 2 hours ahead of Antoine DETOURBET, his compatriot and runner-up in the motorbike trunks category.

In the truck category, Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS made amends for their antics yesterday and spent a good part of the night repairing the SCANIA which had been damaged after lying down in the dunes. The Dutchmen finished 9th overall, ahead of the TATRA of Tomas TOMECEK and the GINAF of Belgians Cedric FERYN, Bjorn BURGELMAN and Tom DE LEEUW. Overall, barring a catastrophe, victory should not elude TOMECEK, who has a lead of over 2 hours.

In the Classic race, Andres BRABECK-LEMATHE and Laurent MAGAT came out on top in the only Regularity Zone of this 10th stage, being just 10 seconds off the ideal time over the 59 km. Overall, Belgian drivers Eric and Tom CLAEYS are still in the lead in their TOYOTA BJ73, but tomorrow there will be two ZRs of 59 km and 150 km. This last ZR, with its unusual distance in the discipline, could well be the judge of this first edition of the AFRICA ECO RACE.

As always on the AFRICA ECO RACE, Saturday’s final day will be the last stage to include a timed sector. This will be the only opportunity for some competitors to put in a good performance before the finish, which will be judged not far from Nouakchott after 247km of special stages. All that remains for the finishers is a 255km liaison to the bivouac near Saint Louis in Senegal, where they will be reunited with friends, family and partners who have come specially for the occasion.

Fino ad ora, l’AFRICA ECO RACE è stata risparmiata dai problemi meteorologici. Purtroppo, venerdì mattina, per la decima tappa, un vento violento ha spazzato l’altopiano di Amodjar causando una tempesta di sabbia che ha impedito agli elicotteri dell’organizzazione di decollare. Senza elicottero, era impossibile garantire la sicurezza ottimale e monitorare la gara, quindi è stata presa la decisione di inviare moto, auto e camion in convoglio alla stazione di servizio da cui è stata data la partenza. Di conseguenza, la speciale di 387 km è stata accorciata di 190 km, eliminando la sezione di dune pianificata per l’inizio della tappa.

Nella categoria moto, dopo la penalità di 6 minuti di ieri per Alessandro BOTTURI, è giusto dire che gli azzurri erano un po’ abbattuti stamattina. Nel complesso, BOTTURI è ora a soli 00:04:38 da CERRUTI.

Non è molto, ma è anche molto, perché domani ci saranno solo 247 km di speciale per BOTTURI per cercare di ribaltare le cose. Ma, poiché sarà lui ad aprire la pista, è quasi missione impossibile. Specialmente perché CERRUTI potrà contare sul compagno di squadra APRILIA Francesco MONTANARI, che ha fatto un ritorno fantastico oggi per finire terzo. Potrebbe benissimo essere in lizza domani.

La fine del rally è stata piuttosto positiva per i giovani del settore, con il francese Attilio FERT che ha conquistato il 4° posto sulla sua KTM, davanti alla HONDA dell’italiano Marco Aurelio FONTANA e alla KTM del pilota svizzero Alexandre VAUDAN, ancora leader della Rookie Rider By Acerbis Challenge. Ora, con i problemi di rifornimento di carburante di Giovanni GRITTI oggi, è anche leader generale delle 450.

Nel Motul Xtreme Rider, Patrice CARRILLON ha di nuovo terminato primo in questa 11a tappa. Il francese è ora 13° nella classifica generale e con più di 2 ore di vantaggio su Antoine DETOURBET, suo connazionale e secondo nella categoria moto.

Nelle quattro ruote, Gautier PAULIN e Remi BOULANGER hanno nuovamente messo alla prova il loro APACHE. I francesi erano in vantaggio di 26 secondi sulla CAN AM del portoghese Ricardo SOUSA e di Jorge BRANDAO. Alla vigilia dell’arrivo, questa leggenda del Motocross mondiale, che sta partecipando al suo primo Cross-Country Rally, ha ora un vantaggio di quasi 4 ore sulla TOYOTA Hilux del belga Pascal FERYN, terzo nella tappa. Tuttavia, è rimasto cauto durante le interviste al traguardo:

“Volevo davvero segnare un’altra vittoria di tappa in questo AFRICA ECO RACE. Allo stesso tempo, è il modo migliore per consolidare la nostra prima posizione. Ma attenzione, finché la bandiera a scacchi non è caduta, può succedere qualsiasi cosa! Non lasciamoci trasportare e aspettiamo fino a domani ».

Nella gara classica, Andres BRABECK-LEMATHE e Laurent MAGAT hanno primeggiato nell’unica Zona di Regolarità di questa 10a tappa, essendo solo 10 secondi fuori dal tempo ideale sui 59 km. Nel complesso, i piloti belgi Eric e Tom CLAEYS sono ancora in testa alla loro TOYOTA BJ73, ma domani ci saranno due ZR da 59 km e 150 km. Quest’ultima ZR, con la sua distanza insolita nella disciplina, potrebbe essere il giudice di questa prima edizione dell’AFRICA ECO RACE.

Come sempre nell’AFRICA ECO RACE, l’ultima giornata di sabato sarà l’ultima tappa che includerà un settore cronometrato. Sarà l’unica opportunità per alcuni concorrenti di ottenere una buona prestazione prima dell’arrivo, che sarà giudicato non lontano da Nouakchott dopo 247 km di speciali. Tutto ciò che resta per i concorrenti è un collegamento di 255 km al bivacco vicino a Saint Louis in Senegal, dove saranno riuniti con amici, familiari e partner venuti appositamente per l’occasione.
